The Management of Information Technology Security (MITS) standard defines baseline security requirements that Canadian federal government departments must fulfill to ensure the security of information and information technology (IT) assets under their control. In particular, it emphasizes “active defence” using the ‘Prevent-Detect-Respond-Recover’ methodology.
As such, government departments must:

1. Adopt a technology infrastructure that meets the intent of this mandate, along with other mandates they may need to comply with.
2. Ensure cost-effective solutions are in place that address current and future regulatory requirements, and minimize duplication of effort.
